A master key system lets one key open every door a manager needs while each tenant, teacher or shift lead carries a key limited to their own. Oakland runs on them: mid-century buildings around Lake Merritt, medical suites near Kaiser Oakland and Highland Hospital, maker spaces in West Oakland with shared shops and private studios, restaurant groups with several rooms on Telegraph. Estuary Lock & Key designs and pins them, on existing hardware where it allows.
The work begins with a floor plan or a walk-through and a conversation about who goes where. The tech sketches the levels: grand master, master, sub-master, change keys. A keyway is chosen that hardware stores cannot copy. Cylinders are pinned on the van, keys are stamped and logged by number, and a key schedule is handed over so the office can see which key opens which door. Room is left for doors added later.
Master key work is quoted per project because door count, keyway and restricted-key options move the price. The written quote lists cylinders per unit, keys per copy and design time once, and it does not move after approval. The $89 service call covers the on-site survey and is applied toward the job. Rekeying a single door later stays inside the system at the per-cylinder rate.
Call with the door count and the building type. A survey is scheduled and the tech's details arrive by text. After the walk-through you receive the access map and the itemized quote. Approve it, and installation is scheduled for a day the building can spare its doors. Keys are handed over logged, and the receipt itemizes every cylinder.
“I manage a twelve-unit building on Lakeshore and had a move-out on a Tuesday morning. Three cylinders rekeyed at $26 each plus the $89 call, $167 on the receipt, exactly what the call said. The tech keyed the mailbox to match without me asking and emailed the invoice while still in the hallway. That receipt went straight into the tenant file.”
Every job is quoted from the list below. The rate you hear on the call is locked, written on the work order and repeated on the receipt.

FAQ
Master Key Systems: quick answers
We run a maker space in West Oakland with shared shop floors and private studios. Does a master system fit?+
It is the standard answer. Members get a change key for their studio and the shared shop, the manager holds the master, and the loading-dock door sits on a sub-master for staff only. When a member leaves, only their studio cylinder is repinned.
Can the master system use the locks already on my Lake Merritt building?+
Usually. Commercial Schlage, Sargent, Yale and similar cylinders pin into a system. Cylinders with mismatched keyways or worn pins are swapped and listed in the quote so the count is visible before work starts.
What if the master key is lost?+
The doors under that master are repinned, not the whole building. A system built in tiers limits how far one lost key reaches, and a restricted keyway makes an unauthorized copy unlikely in the first place.
