How it works

From the first ring to a door that locks

  1. 1

Call and say what is locked

House, car, storefront or safe, and where in Oakland it is. The rate is read from the list and locked on that call.

  2. 2

    Watch for the text

The technician's name, a description of the van and the arrival window arrive by text before the van does.

  3. 3

    ID first, then the lock

The technician confirms the address or vehicle is yours, then opens without damage. Drilling is discussed only if picking fails, and only with your yes.

  4. 4

Card or tap, receipt by email

The total matches the call line by line. The receipt lands in your inbox before the van leaves the block.

Lock rekey
I manage a twelve-unit building on Lakeshore and had a move-out on a Tuesday morning. Three cylinders rekeyed at $26 each plus the $89 call, $167 on the receipt, exactly what the call said. The tech keyed the mailbox to match without me asking and emailed the invoice while still in the hallway. That receipt went straight into the tenant file.

Storefront locks
The deadlatch on our taqueria door on International started sticking and my cook got stuck outside at 6:45 one morning. New latch and cylinder for $210, done before we opened at eleven. He also adjusted the closer so the door actually catches now. Rate never changed from the call.

Lock replacement
Our brown-shingle off College has a 1915 mortise lock that finally gave up. Quoted $240 for a period-style replacement that fit the original door cut, and $240 is what I paid. The only knock is the arrival landed at the far end of the window they texted, so I lost an extra half hour on a Saturday. The work itself is clean and the old brass plate is still on the door.

House lockout
Came back from a show at the Fox at 11:30 and my keys were sitting on the kitchen counter of my loft. The call quoted $165, the $130 lockout plus the $35 evening add, and told me the tech's name and that he drove a gray van with the logo on the side. Fourteen minutes later he was in the lobby. Door open in under five, no scratches on the deadbolt.

Panic bar
We run a woodshop and gallery in a converted warehouse near the West Oakland station and the fire marshal wanted a proper exit device on the side door. Quoted $480 installed for a rim device with outside pull. The tech came Thursday afternoon, mounted it square on a door that is anything but, and the inspector signed off the following week. Card, receipt, done.

Smart lock
I rent out the upstairs unit of a Victorian off Telegraph and was tired of handing over keys. Keypad lock installed on the unit door and paired to my phone for $235. The tech set a guest code that expires on checkout and showed me how to change it from the app. Under an hour start to finish.

Why Estuary

The bill is the part people brace for. So the bill is the part that is fixed.

The rate is locked on the call

It comes from the published list, includes the service call and any surcharge, and does not move afterward.

A van somewhere in Oakland, not a counter

Mobile only. The van stages between Downtown, the flats and the hills instead of waiting at a shop across town.

Hardware for Oakland doors on board

Mortise parts for Craftsman doors, aluminum storefront deadlatches, jamb armor, keypad locks and blanks for most cars.

Paper you can hand to someone

Itemized card receipt by email for the landlord, HOA, property manager or insurer who asks what was done.

Before you call anyone

Five checks before anyone drives to your door

A search for a locksmith in Oakland returns national call centers that quote $15 online and bill several hundred once the lock is open. None of these checks takes more than a minute on the call.

Read the guides
  1. 1Ask for the rate as one total with the service call and any night surcharge inside it. If the answer is a starting figure followed by "and up", end the call.
  2. 2Ask for the technician's name and what the van looks like, by text, before dispatch. A company that cannot say who is coming is routing your call to whoever is nearest and unaffiliated.
  3. 3Ask whether the lock will be picked before anything is drilled. Hearing "it will have to be drilled" before anyone has seen the door is a sales script, not a diagnosis.
  4. 4Read the invoice header. It should carry the same business name you searched and a 510 number, not a generic "Locksmith Services" with no city attached.
  5. 5Decline cash-only. A card receipt with line items is what a chargeback, a landlord or an insurer will accept. A total written on a notepad is not a record of anything.

FAQ

Asked before the call, answered here

How long does the van take to reach my part of Oakland?+

The citywide average is 24 minutes. Downtown and Jack London Square usually see the van in 15, Lake Merritt in 16, West Oakland, Temescal and Piedmont Avenue in 18, Rockridge and Fruitvale in 20, and Laurel and Dimond in 22. Montclair and the streets above Hwy 13 run closer to 28 because of the grades and switchbacks. A Bay Bridge backup or a stalled lane on I-880 can add to any of those, and the window given on the call reflects the traffic at that moment.

What exactly is locked in with The Locked-In Rate?+

The full amount for the job you described: the $89 service call, the work itself and any evening or overnight surcharge, all read from the published list and stated as one total. That total is what the card is charged. It changes only if you ask for something extra once the technician is there, such as a rekey after a lockout, and that addition is quoted and approved as its own line before it starts.

Is there a surcharge at night or on weekends?+

Weekends and holidays are billed at weekday rates. Arrivals between 8pm and midnight add $35 and arrivals between midnight and 7am add $70. Both are folded into the total on the call, so a $105 house lockout is $140 in the evening and $175 overnight, and nothing further is added when the van pulls up.

Will the lock be drilled?+

Not unless you agree to it. Residential deadbolts, apartment cylinders, most storefront locks and most car doors open with picks, decoders, bypass tools or air wedges, and the hardware keeps working afterward. When a lock is damaged, high-security or seized to the point where picking fails, the technician explains the drilling option and the replacement cost before touching anything, and the rate for that stays inside what was locked on the call.

What proof do I need to show before a door or car is opened?+

For a home or apartment, a photo ID with the address, or ID plus a lease, a utility account or mail on your phone if the address on the ID is different. For a car, ID plus registration or an insurance card, which can be digital. For a business, ID plus a lease, a business license or a call from the owner or property manager. Without one of those, the door stays closed.

I own rental units near Lake Merritt. How does a turnover rekey work?+

Rekeying swaps the pins inside the existing cylinders so old keys stop working, at $21 to $36 per cylinder plus the $89 service call. Unit door, deadbolt, mailbox and any storage locker can be keyed alike so the incoming tenant gets one key, and a building master can be kept working if you already run one. The itemized receipt lists each cylinder by door, which is what most property files and management software want.

Can the original mortise locks in an older Rockridge or Temescal house be kept?+

Usually. Mortise and rim locks from the 1910s and 1920s can be rekeyed, cleaned and re-sprung on site, and worn parts are often replaceable from the van. When a case is cracked or the parts no longer exist, a modern mortise body or a period-style replacement is fitted to the original door cut so the trim and plates stay put. Which route makes sense is discussed at the door, and the rate is set before any work starts.

Do you come into the airport, Coliseum and BART parking lots?+

Yes. Car lockouts, key replacement and fob programming are done in the OAK economy and daily lots, the Coliseum and Arena lots, and BART parking at Coliseum, Fruitvale, MacArthur, Rockridge, West Oakland and Lake Merritt. Tell the call which lot and roughly where the car is parked, and expect the technician to ask for registration before the door is opened. Lot entry fees, where they exist, are shown on the receipt at cost.
